Park Inn by Radisson Leuven Hotel receives second Green Key accolade

The Park Inn by Radisson Leuven Hotel has received a Green Key award for the second year in a row, in recognition of its efforts in eco-friendly and sustainable tourism.

[USPRwire, Thu Jul 18 2013] The Park Inn by Radisson Leuven is celebrating for the second year in a row, after environmental organisation Bond Beter Leefmilieu (BBL), in association with Flanders Tourism, presented the hotel with its second Green Key eco-label.

The international accolade is awarded to establishments that have worked towards successfully reducing resource and energy usage. The Green Key label aims to encourage ecologically sound and sustainable businesses through the use of environmentally responsible operation methods and increased staff awareness.

More than 2100 establishments in 41 countries, including the Park Inn by Radisson Leuven have now received the Green Key accolade, which is presently the largest eco-label for accommodation globally.

With this Leuven hotel receiving its second Green Key label, BBL and Flanders Tourism now want to continue to encourage local establishments and tourism companies to work as sustainably as possible.

The hotel, which was opened in November 2011, has achieved the Green Key label for its sustainability practices for its 133 guestrooms, as well as for its six Leuven meeting rooms.

In order to achieve Green Key status, the establishments must meet a series of criteria regarding energy, water and ease of mobility. Judged by an independent jury including government representatives, environmental organisations and figures from the tourism industry, the eco-label denotes an ambitious environmental policy, environmentally conscious employees, water and energy efficiency, waste prevention and the encouragement of environmentally conscious behaviour amongst staff and guests alike.

The owners must also make steps to organise activities that promote efficiency and sustainability and must also demonstrate an eye for landscape maintenance, sufficient open space and sustainable mobility.

At the Park Inn by Radisson Leuven, big efforts were made to achieve the Green Key accolade for a second year. The Leuven accommodation is one of the few hotels in Belgium to boast a state-of-the-art extraction system, which significantly reduces the CO2 emissions from the hotel. In addition, the hotel has installed a water recycling system, discharging water from showers and baths into a tank, before being cleaned and used to flush toilets. This system saves the hotel six litres of water per toilet flush.
