United States Power Report Q1 2016 - New Market Study Published

Fast Market Research recommends "United States Power Report Q1 2016" from Business Monitor International, now available

[USPRwire, Wed Jan 06 2016] We maintain natural gas-fired power and renewable energy will be the fastest growing sectors within the US electricity market, attracting increasing investment - together with power transmission and distribution infrastructure. This will be the result of supportive regulations for renewables and the continued availability of cheap natural gas, which will depress wholesale power prices and squeeze the profits of merchant nuclear power plants.

Latest Updates And Structural Trends

With BMI's Oil & Gas team forecasting Henry Hub natural gas prices to remain below H1 2014 levels through to 2024, we believe the continued availability of cheap natural gas will be the main driver of developments in the US power market over the coming decade. In particular, low fuel prices will be the primary cause of a switch to gas- and away from coal-fired power, with regulations issued by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) determining the pace of coal power's decline.

Data from the latest EIA's Short-Term Energy Outlook (STEO) suggests the shift from coal to natural gas in power generation is happening at a faster pace that we initially anticipated. Accordingly, we revised down our estimate for coal-power generation - and up that for natural gas - in 2015 and our forecast for 2016. As a result, we expect natural gas to displace coal as the main source of power generation in the US by as early as 2019.

In October 2015, electric utility Duke Energy announced it plans to acquire gas distributor Piedmont Natural Gas for USD4.9bn; similarly, in August, Southern Co disclosed it will buy gas distributor AGL Resources Inc for USD8bn. These developments illustrate the increasingly central importance of natural gas in US utilities' long-term strategies - aligning with our positive outlook for the sector.
