[USPRwire, Wed Dec 09 2015] Political risks could undermine the performance of Turkey's petrochemicals sector in 2016, following a year of volatile growth in 2015. With chemicals output up 2.1% and rubber and plastic rising 0.7% in the January-August period, some segments are facing capacity constraints while others are stalling due to market sector weaknesses.
Turkish petrochemicals consumption has two main sources: products used in the construction industry and intermediate goods for export-oriented sectors such as the automotive industry. A transition to slower, more balanced growth relative to the past decade will continue. Turkey's rapidly growing population will necessitate continued high levels of housing development, which should drive demand for construction-related plastic products. As an intermediate sector supplying industry, the Turkish petrochemicals industry is insufficient to cover all domestic demand, so imports will continue to track demand trends until major expansion comes on stream.

Azerbaijan's SOCAR is pressing ahead with further capacity expansion with USD10bn of investment in Petkim during 2015-2023. In August 2015 it sold off a 15% stake in its local subsidiary SOCAR Turkey, which owns a majority shareholding in national petrochemicals producer Petkim, which helped clear debts. Petkim aims to triple its petrochemicals production capacity at the cluster to 10mn tpa by 2023. A new olefins complex and downstream units are planned as part of its investment programme. More recently, it has announced a new speciality chemicals plant that should add significant value to output.
