Many consumers who used to own desktops decided to purchase laptops with a larger screen. Domestic manufacturers responded to the change in consumer preferences by offering large laptops with faster processors, which enable users to execute heavy-load tasks such as video editing. These laptops are not suitable to be carried outside because of the size and weight.
Apple maintained its leading position in the computer category at 27%, increasing by 1.5 percentage points from 2012. Strengthening product offerings in tablets by offering a greater variety of sizes, weights, and storage attracted consumers’ attention to increase its sales throughout 2013. High brand recognition and brand loyalty thanks to the iPhone series whose new products were also launched in 2013 benefited the company’s sales performance.

Retail volume sales of computers and peripherals in Japan are expected to post a slower CAGR of 1% over the forecast period, compared to the 5% CAGR registered over the review period. The slower growth is mainly due to the fact that consumers have migrated to alternative products such as tablets and other portable computers from desktops and laptops. Such migration started in 2010 in Japan and now has less impact on the category as a whole, though tablets and other portable computers remains the only category which is expected see volume sales increase over the forecast period, at an 8% CAGR.
